The Panama Banana is a testament to Rimsaite's innovative approach to design. She was inspired by the shape of a surfboard, which allows the furniture to integrate seamlessly into a beach environment. The design also bears a resemblance to a ship, adding a playful element to the piece.
What sets the Panama Banana apart from other outdoor furniture is its dual functionality. It can be used as a hammock for relaxation, but when the user is ready for some action, a simple 90-degree turn transforms it into a football goal. This design encourages active relaxation, a concept that is becoming increasingly important in today's health-conscious society.
The Panama Banana is made from plywood and fabric ropes. The plywood pieces were cut using a CNC machine, polished, and then covered with lacquer. The furniture is lightweight and can be easily moved around. To assemble it, two support details need to be added. When not in use, these supports can be removed, allowing the furniture to fold flat for easy storage.
Rimsaite began the project in October 2016 in Vilnius and completed it in January 2017. The Panama Banana was exhibited at Fuorisalone in April 2017. The design has been recognized for its innovation and creativity, winning the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017.
The Panama Banana is a perfect example of how design can be used to promote healthier habits. Rimsaite's research showed that people tend to be less active at the beach, often because sports equipment is already in use or because they equate relaxation with inactivity. The Panama Banana addresses these issues, providing a piece of furniture that encourages active relaxation.
Despite the challenges faced in creating support details that could maintain a strong construction and allow the furniture to fold flat, Rimsaite was successful in her endeavor. The Panama Banana is not just a piece of furniture; it's a lifestyle statement. It encourages people to embrace an active lifestyle, even when they are relaxing at the beach.
